Overview

Trefforest or Treforest are one and the same, with the former spelling being the more accurate, Welsh version. Serving the village of the same name, this station sits on the Merthyr Line, north of Cardiff. Many of the almost 1 million passengers that use the two platforms are students of the University of South Wales' Trefforest campus.

Originally opened in 1847 as Treforest, the extra f was added to the name in May 1980. Workers at the nearby tinplate works would come into the area via the railway, their money and that of the tinplate industry allowed the region to flourish. In 1936, the Treforest Trading Estate opened, encouraging even more businesses to set up a base here. But the region's main claim to fame is as the birthplace of legendary singer, Sir Tom Jones on 7 June 1940.
