Surrounded by well maintained National Cycle Network routes, why not take advantage of the cycle spaces on our trains, and take your bike to Newport? Peaceful lanes lined with trees, a stunningly dramatic coastline and impressive granite castles make these trails the ideal antidotes to everyday bustle. If you prefer the greater challenge of mountain biking, BMXs or even skateboarding, Tredegar Park is the place to go. Designed by, and for, skaters, its features include peanut bowls and jumps.
On the banks of the River Usk, the 14th century Newport Castle is best seen from the opposite bank, where the full height of the remaining towers and the preserved watergate can be appreciated. With much of the original castle buried under modern roads and contemporary buildings, what’s left is still very much worth a visit, as is Newport Cathedral. Originally constructed in the 5th century, the building, also known as St Woolos Cathedral, was rebuilt in the 9th. Throughout the centuries, it has been the victim of several sackings, including sustaining damage in the English Civil War. Hosting music concerts, art exhibitions and theatre, there’s a performance to suit everyone.
The perfect destination for a recharge, Newport has plenty to offer the daytripper, and lots to keep you busy if you’re planning a longer break. Book your tickets with just one tap using our mobile app and stay up-to-date on our latest special offers.
