Playing a notable role in the Industrial Revolution with several coal and tin mines, the region thrived. Workers moved in and the supporting infrastructure, such as general stores, public houses and schools, arrived. At its peak, just one mine employed nearly 650 men, however, the town’s growth slowed with the decline of the tin and coal mines.

This quaint Mid Glamorgan town has gained international renown for a surprising reason. The universally popular gundog - the Welsh Springer Spaniel was originally bred here. Often bred with border collies, labradors and other breeds to make an intelligent, gentle family pet, the Springer Spaniel traditionally has a red mark in the middle of their forehead and this is known as the Llanharan Spot.
In 2015, the town played the starring role in a new American drama The Bastard Executioner. This historical series is based on the real-life 13th-century Welsh revolt against the English. It starred several well-known faces, including Ed Sheeran as Sir Cormac, Stephen Moyer as Chamberlain Milus Corbet and the fantastically named Scroobius Pip as Aiden. Many locals also appeared on-screen playing villagers, soldiers and other vital roles.
Llanharan House, on the outskirts of the town, also played a part in the series and is a great place to visit. Constructed in 1750, the Grade II listed house stands in glorious parklands that stretch for a long way.
Next to the Ewenny Fach river, the Town Square is surrounded by several impressive architectural buildings, including The High Corner, built at the start of the 18th-century. All the paths in Llanharan lead to and from the Square, and this is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by.
