Cardiff has the largest concentration of medieval castles in the world, but the 11th century Cardiff Castle, sitting in the heart of the city, is well worth a visit. Built by Norman invaders on the site of a Roman fort, this well-preserved monument to ages past is surrounded by glorious parkland, home to the popular open air theatre, hosting plays, live music - Sir Tom Jones, for example, has played here several times, and more.
But the contemporary buildings in Cardiff are just as majestic. For instance, there's the Wales Millenium Centre, which is very recognisable thanks to its giant inscription on the front. There's also the 74,000-seater Principality
Stadium, which is the home of Welsh rugby.
Cardiff Bay offers a picturesque waterfront, and also houses an eclectic mixture of attractions, such as the Water Activity Centre, Mermaid Quay, and Techniquest. With something to suit everyone, you could easily spend the entire day just exploring this area. So, if you plan to stay a little longer, why not book a room at the Coal Exchange, which used to be the hub of the coal industry in Wales. Now a sumptuous hotel, it’s designed in a Renaissance Revival style, and is a good example of how history and modernity converge in Cardiff.
