Founded in 1 A.D. by the Romans, Chester is the site of the largest amphitheatre in Britain. Used for both military training and entertainment, this and the fortress that became Chester show how important the city was to the Romans.
Many tourists visit Chester to explore the Jodrell Bank Observatory and its Lovell Telescope. One of the largest steerable telescopes in the world, on a clear day it can be seen from Manchester Airport, Mount Snowdon and even the Peak District. From 1957 it has been tracking data and signals from space, including Apollo 11, and Beagle 2 and has played a big part in the SETI project.
Retail therapy is on hand too, big designer names and high street stores are all available here, modern style hiding behind the beautiful medieval black and white timbered buildings. However, many visit Chester to experience the unique adventure that is the Rows. Built over 700 years ago, this two-storey Elizabethan shopping arcade is a must-see. The upper gallery contains quaint boutiques offering artisan gifts and treasures - handmade jewellery in tissue and velvet-lined gift boxes, or delicate mouth-blown studio glass, all manner of gorgeous delights can be found here.
If culture is your thing, the Chester Storyhouse will easily fulfil that desire. From the open-air cinema, theatre and stage shows to contemporary dance and stand up comedy, there’s a year-round programme of entertainment for kids and adults to enjoy. The nearby restaurants serve a wide and delicious range of cuisine, and for an after-show meal, they make the perfect end to the day.
